Former Two Oceans Champ and prostate cancer survivor, Thulani Sibisi, to take fight against cancer to streets of Soweto…

28 October 2014 – CANSA is excited to be a part of this year’s Nike Soweto Marathon taking place on 2 November 2014.

As the official charity, the CANSA Lukholweni Care Home team will be promoting cancer awareness & SunSmart behaviour, by providing free sunscreen to all participants and spectators.

The Route

The 42km route takes the runners into the historic heart of Soweto and by the 12-kilometre marker – Vilakazi Street. As you wind and climb the hill you will also pass Uncle Tom’s Community Hall and the Hector Pieterson Museum and memorial that commemorate the 1976 student uprising.

A good time to reflect on our country’s robust recent past. The 36-kilometre marker is met at the Chris Hani Baragwanatha Hospital and the end is soon visible as the runners make their way over the bridge crossing the N1 Highway.

This is more than just a tour through the warm heart of Soweto. It is a journey through our tumultuous history. To be sure the route is an undulating one, testing at times but it is a passage full of great reward, made extra special by the people of Soweto.

Former Two Oceans Champ & Prostate Cancer Survivor to Participate

Prostate cancer survivor, Thulani Sibisi, is joining the fight against cancer, by taking part in the Soweto Marathon. As a former Two Oceans Marathon winner, he prides himself in being fit and healthy.

After experiencing difficulty in urinating, along with a burning sensation in 2010, and collapsing in 2012, he was diagnosed with stage three prostate cancer. Read more…

As a cancer survivor in remission, he is taking the fight against cancer to the streets of Soweto.

“At the Soweto Marathon I will be running in order to show all men that you can overcome cancer. I hope to motivate the Soweto community to become a part of the CANSA Soweto Care Centre and support its Lukholweni Care Home, in order to get the cancer education, care and support they might need,” says Sibisi.

Visit CANSA at the Marathon Expo

The CANSA Lukholweni Care Home team will be at the marathon expo from Thursday 30 October to Saturday 1 November, where runners can redeem their race packs.

“We’ll help all the runners and participants to stay SunSmart, by providing free sunscreen at one water point along the route, on race day. We are also going to exhibit our Men’s Health material, to educate men on the importance of screening and early detection, as well as offer Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) tests – a simple blood test to detect prostate abnormalities. We will also be selling CANSA products to help raise funds,” says Johanna Francis, CANSA Lukholweni Care Home Coordinator.
