10 December 2012 - Two teenage friends who have just matriculated from Cannons Creek High School are cycling from Cape Town to Mozambique in support of the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) covering almost 3000 km over 45 days. Jed Johnson, 19 and Cameron Stuart, 18 left Gordon’s Bay on 27 November 2012 and aim to promote health and SunSmart awareness and raise funds for CANSA.
“We’re truly grateful that South Africa’s youth is taking it upon themselves to educate the public on leading a balanced lifestyle and helping to reduce their cancer risk,” says CANSA CEO Sue Janse van Rensburg.
CANSA’s health awareness campaigns encourages all to lead balanced lifestyles – emphasising physical exercise and balanced food intake while avoiding alcohol, smoking and obesity. During the summer months, the SunSmart campaign is urges safety in the sun to reduce skin cancer risk.
Cam and Jed’s project is called “Wings at our Feet” and are maintaining a blog and Facebook page to keep their followers and donors updated on their progress. They making the public aware of tips on being safe in the sun and the sale of CANSA UV-Smart Armbands that monitor the UV intensity (the radiation you are exposed to when in the sun). It turns darker in colour as radiation intensifies. Each shade of colour gives protection recommendations you can follow in order to avoid sunburn.
This adventure is backed with big hearts to try and make a difference within their generation. Money raised through their efforts will go towards facilitating youth and school awareness programmes to promote a healthy future for the youth.
CANSA encourages all to get involved and show support towards the boys and invest by donating to the CANSA Wings at our Feet campaign. Click on this link to Donate to their project.
