Carrol Boyes Pendant

Carrol Boyes Pendant

Every year Carrol Boyes designs a new piece of jewellery.  Proceeds from the sales of this piece are donated to a worthy charity supporting breast cancer health awareness, such as CANSA.

This year a classic ribbon shape pendant has been lovingly created in honour of this auspicious month. Cast in pewter, the pendant hangs on a silken pink cord and it’s with this pendant that the ‘Carrol Boyes Goes Pink Campaign’ hopes to inspire faith, action and change.

Breast cancer does not discriminate against race, age or culture. It affects one and all and can  have a devastating impact on families. With this in mind, the ‘Carrol Boyes Goes Pink Campaign’ aims to educate, inform and support our sisters, daughters, mothers and grandmothers and ultimately raise awareness around breast cancer in order to fight this heart breaking disease.

Wear this ribbon and join women across South Africa in support of this worthy initiative and be safe in the knowledge that you are making a precious contribution to CANSA who urge women to adopt a balanced lifestyle and to go for regular screenings to reduce their cancer risk.  You can make a difference!

For each pendant sold CANSA will receive 10% towards their Women’s Health Campaign, until the end of October 2014.

SANBS and CANSA Mandela Day3 June 2014: CANSA is teaming up with the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) to host a blood drive on Friday 18 July, at Melrose Arch, Johannesburg, in support of Nelson Mandela Day. Elize Joubert, CANSA’s Acting CEO says “As part of our 67 minutes to the community, we taking action in a positive way by showing our support for the SANBS. We’re inspired by the late Nelson Mandela who was a prostate cancer survivor. Blood is vital for the treatment of cancer patients, as well as patients needing blood transfusions, so we encourage all to come and donate blood.” The blood drive will be taking place at Stanlib (Ground Floor) in Melrose Arch from 10am to 4pm. Registrations take place in the Square at Melrose Arch where CANSA is hosting an exhibit on how to reduce your cancer risk. Sini Subrayen, SANBS Public Relations Practitioner, added “We’re excited to team up with CANSA for this year’s Mandela Day. Cancer Patients Rely on Blood Donations & Transfusions

Donate Blood - Help a Cancer Patient Fight Cancer...

Donate Blood – Help a Cancer Patient Fight Cancer…

Blood is vital for the treatment of cancer patients, as well as for cancer patients needing blood transfusions:

  • A blood transfusion is a procedure in which blood or a blood component is transferred from one individual (donor) to another (recipient).
  • Transfusions are used to replace lost components of blood, the most common components being platelets, red blood cells, plasma and cryoprecipitate.

Why Do Cancer Patients Need Blood Transfusions?

  • Cancer treatments, such as surgery, chemotherapy and bone marrow transplantation, or the cancer itself may cause the need for a transfusion.

Which Blood Components Are Received by Cancer Patients During Transfusions?

  • Red blood cells: Red blood cells contain haemoglobin, an iron-rich protein that carries oxygen throughout the body to vital organs and tissues. They are used to treat anaemia (a low number of red blood cells), which can be caused by cancer and /or cancer treatment.
  • Cryoprecipitate: Cryoprecipitate is the part of plasma that separates as frozen plasma slowly thaws. It contains a higher concentration of blood clotting proteins than regular plasma. This blood component is not often needed by patients with cancer.
  • Plasma: Plasma is the pale yellow liquid portion of the blood in which cells travel. It carries proteins that help control bleeding and antibodies that help fight infection. A plasma transfusion may be needed if a person has experienced severe bleeding.
  • Platelets: Platelets are tiny fragments of cells made in the bone marrow and released into the blood stream in the same way as red blood cells. They are critical to blood clotting, which is the process that stops bleeding. When cancer and /or cancer treatment causes a person’s platelet level to fall too low, a transfusion may be given to reduce the risk of serious or life-threatening bleeding.

Become a Blood Platelet Donor & Improve A Cancer Patient’s Chance of Survival

  • Donated blood platelets can only be stored for 5 days and thus platelet donors are in great demand.
  • Platelets are essential to stop bleeding and bruising and for the treatment of patients with cancers and leukaemia, who have too few platelets, as a result of their disease or treatment.
  • The platelet donation process differs from donating whole blood & you need to be screened before becoming a donor.

Screening Process:

  • A platelet pre-test has to be done first to determine if your platelet count is high enough before you become a platelet donor.
  • You would need to book an appointment with one of the SANBS centres that offer this special service.
  • The procedure takes 60 – 90 minutes.
  • You will be served sandwiches and refreshments of your choice while the cell separator machine is taking the very precious platelets/plasma from you.
  • The platelets and a small amount of plasma are automatically collected into a bag and the rest of the blood, including the red cells, are returned to you.
  • You can donate every 14 – 28 days.

About Relay For Life

Relay For Life is truly a special one-of-a kind overnight experience offering you and your workplace the opportunity to fight against cancer. It represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those facing cancer will be supported and that one day cancer will be overcome. Help us raises awareness and much needed funds to fight cancer.

During Relay, teams of 10-15 co-workers, friends, neighbours and families commit to keeping at least one member walking the track at all times because cancer never sleeps.

Each team submits a commitment or registration fee. We also encourage teams to raise funds leading up to the event.

Teams set up camp around the track before the CANSA Relay For Life event opens with the moving Survivors Lap of Honour followed by a Caregivers lap. After sunset the candles are lit in the Luminaria bags that line the track. Everyone gathers round to pay tribute and remember those lost to cancer, support those fighting cancer and rejoice with those who have fought the disease and won. Come and enjoy camping-out, entertainment, good food, games, networking and community camaraderie.

People who join, all share a common purpose – their desire to fight cancer and to support CANSA who enable research, educate the public and provide support to all affected by cancer.

Prof Michael Herbst, Ms Quelhas & Magdalene Seguin

Ms Quelhas, Vice-President of the Mozambican Association Against Cancer, recently met with Professor Michael Herbst, Head of Health CANSA and Magdalene Seguin, Acting Head Advocacy & Clinical Specialist CANSA.

The Mozambican Association Against Cancer is an NGO that provides cancer support to individuals throughout Mozambique.

Ms Quelhas requested closer collaboration between CANSA and the Mozambican Association Against Cancer, due to cancer services in Mozambique not being well equipped and in order to receive input re improvement of support services offered to cancer Survivors, by the Association.

Challenges Facing Breast Cancer Patients in Mozambique

Breast cancer is so under-resourced that is was only in 2009 that the public health service acquired three mammogram machines, one for each regional hospital in the South, Central and Northern regions. (Three units, when the population of Mozambique is 21 million).

When women with breast problems eventually get to a doctor, it is frequently too late. The cancer is often already at a terminal stage. Those with a chance of cure must travel to the capital, Maputo, for treatment. For them this means chemotherapy or a mastectomy, but not radiotherapy as it is not available.

Patients with financial means usually travel to neighbouring South Africa for life-prolonging radiotherapy. The poor have to do without.

Fredo Touring for CANSA

Fredo & Janey will be touring to raise funds for CANSA Cape Metro

Fredo & Janey will be touring to raise funds for CANSA Cape Metro Care Centre – follow their progress here…

On Friday 25 July 2014, a unique project to raise funds for CANSA Cape Metro Care Centre’s care and support programme for those affected by cancer, will be launched. This involves a cross-country camping tour starting in Cape Town, crossing over South Africa and ending in the Mother City six weeks later.

The project, known as ‘FREDO Touring for CANSA’, will be undertaken in a 4×4 vehicle and off-road caravan by two Cape Town citizens, Fredo and Janey Meintjes.

Fredo and Janey will cover the costs of the trip themselves and are asking for sponsorship for CANSA Cape Metro Care Centre’s care & support programme, from fellow South Africans.

Sponsor a certain amount per kilometre (approx 7 000 km) – the couple have already been assured of the commitment of a number of leading companies in the fresh produce industry, to sponsor them per kilometre.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu shared a special farewell message…

Fred & Janey Personally Affected by Cancer

“’FREDO Touring for CANSA’ is Fredo Meintjes’s way of giving something back for the support he received while being treated for cancer himself,” says Henley Botha, Regional Manager for the CANSA Cape Metro Care Centre. “A Survivor himself who has overcome cancer with so much support, particularly from Janey, the couple will now assist us to raise funds which are so vital to care for those fighting the disease.”

Fredo and Janey add, “We’ve always planned this epic journey for this year. Our own experience and the fantastic news we have been receiving from our doctors in recent months have convinced us that it’s also offering us a unique opportunity to help others.”

Botha stated, as far as it could be established, this is the first time in South Africa that the touring community participates in such an event. “Their leadership and dedication to us raises fantastic opportunities for the whole South African community to get involved. This could be the start of a huge support effort in support of cancer survivors, given the large numbers of people who are daily packing their vehicles and touring South Africa to enjoy the scenic beauty and wonderful resources of our country.”

Fredo & Janey Grateful for Support

Fredo and Jane are fortunate to have the support of two of the country’s leading fruit producers and exporters, Karsten Group, growers and exporters of table grapes in the Orange River and deciduous fruit in the Western Cape, as well Zest Fruit from Stellenbosch, and their partners Komati Fruit based in Malelane, in Mpumalanga. They have committed themselves to sponsor the tour for every kilometre travelled. The couple are likely to cover around 7 000 kilometres and the contributions will therefore help to boost CANSA’s funds for patient care significantly.

There are a number of other companies who still have to decide on the level of their sponsorship, which includes the international fruit publishing group, Market Intelligence Ltd, based in London. “They’ll be our international media partner to assist us in promoting the care and support for our local communities by these leading international fruit marketers,” stated Fredo.

Follow Their Progress

The exploits of Fredo and Janey during the duration of the project, ‘FREDO Touring for CANSA’, will be covered by local and online media.

“We’ll provide regular updates on our blog, www.fredo.co.za, and on CANSA’s Facebook & Twitter platforms.” says Fredo.

The Route

The journey will take Fredo and Janey from the cold and wet weather of the Western Cape, through the dry and cold Karoo and Free State to Golden Gate in the Maluti Mountains. Thereafter the touring party will cross the eastern Highveld, stopping over at Badplaas in Mpumalanga, before entering the Kruger National Park at the Malelane Gate. “Here we’ll pick up some of the juiciest oranges from our friends at Komati Fruit, which are now in season. Our Kruger adventure will carry us from the South to the North and we’ll also make mention of campaigns such as ‘Save the Rhino’ and tell our friends around the world of their plight.”

‘FREDO Touring for CANSA’ will eventually turn home and along the route visit the Kamdeboo National Park near Graaff-Reinet, the Southern Cape, in particular the Valleys of Sharon Fruit around Swellendam, before ending in Cape Town.

Make a Donation & Support Those Affected by Cancer

All contributions, big and small, will be welcome. Those who want to support Fredo and Janey’s epic journey in aid of CANSA Cape Metro Care Centre’s care & support programmes can donate as follows:

“During this cold winter, cancer patients often don’t often have clothes to warm them or decent beds to sleep in. They also lack the nutrition required to help them fight the disease, so every cent that is raised through ‘FREDO Touring for CANSA’ will make a huge difference to their lives.”

Caring for Caregivers Because You Care

CANSA Care Week Online (1) postAfrikaanse Persvrystelling…

28th July 2014: CANSA places the spotlight on Caregivers this CANSA Care Week 1 – 7 August 2014.

Who is a Cargiver?

A Caregiver is anyone who cares, without being paid, for a friend or family member who is fighting cancer and cannot cope without support.

“We feel that sometimes Caregivers’ loving care and support, which they lend to those affected by cancer, can go unnoticed. We really hope to change that; the wellbeing of a Caregiver is just as important as that of the Survivor they are caring for. This CANSA Care Week, we want to encourage everyone to celebrate and salute all Caregivers,” says CANSA’s Acting CEO, Elize Joubert.

Not All Caregivers Choose This Role

Caregivers come from all walks of life, all cultures and ages. Many feel they are doing what anyone else would in the same situation – looking after their loved ones, a best friend or even colleagues and just getting on with it.

Some Caregivers don’t choose to become Caregivers; it often just happens.

Joubert adds, “More than 60% of our volunteers are dedicated to helping our CANSA staff with our care & support service, as well as promoting health, while many also help with other projects.”

Caregivers Can Experience Compassion Fatigue

Many Caregivers often experience compassion fatigue when they neglect their own self-care, in favour of putting most of their effort and focus on caring for someone else – this is known as Caregiver burnout. Burnout describes the end result of stress in the life of a Caregiver and combines emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and low personal accomplishment.

CANSA’s Top Tips for Caregivers:

  • Find Support: Talk to others who are in a similar situation. This can help you to cope with common feelings of anger, guilt, isolation, fear, sadness, or anticipatory grief.
  • Know when you are stressed: Know the signs of stress (which include feeling exhausted; getting sick more often; sleeplessness; impatience, irritability, or forgetfulness).
  • Take time out: Make time for yourself and others. Although a person who has cancer may have many needs that require your attention, it’s important for you to make time for yourself. Spend time doing something you enjoy, with the people you love.
  • Don’t be too hard on yourself: Be kind and patient with yourself. It’s normal to experience occasional bouts of anger or frustration, along with the guilt for having those feelings. Try to find a positive way to deal with these feelings.
  • Take care of yourself: Make time to exercise, eat healthy foods, stay hydrated, and get enough sleep.
  • Stay positive: Having a positive attitude can help set the tone for everything you do and take on.

Cancer Survivors Can Give Caregivers Recognition at CANSA’s Relay For Life

“A fun way for cancer Survivors and their Caregivers to get involved with CANSA and to receive the recognition they deserve, is through CANSA’s Relay For Life national project. It’s a unique event that is fun-filled, takes place overnight, where teams enter to raise cancer awareness and funds to fight cancer. The event emphasises cancer Survivorship, is volunteer driven and community owned,” encourages Joubert.

CANSA invites all Survivors and their Caregivers to a Relay in their community – a CANSA Relay For Life event opens with a ‘Survivors’ lap, that celebrates cancer Survivors. This is followed by a ‘Caregivers’ lap, to honour all Caregivers who lend care and support to those affected by cancer.

Sorg vir Versorgers Omrede Jy Omgee

CANSA Care Week Online AFR postEnglish Press Release…

28 Julie 2014: KANSA plaas die kollig hierdie KANSA Sorgweek 1 – 7 Augustus 2014 op Versorgers.

Wie Is ‘n Versorger?

Versorgers Ervaar Dikwels Sielsmoegheid

Kanker-Oorwinnaars Kan Versorgers Erkenning Gee By KANSA se Relay For Life
