Prostate Cancer Survivor, Thulani Sibisi, who will be supporting CANSA at the upcoming Soweto Marathon, is joining the fight against cancer by taking education to his community.

“We have to start something to educate people,” says Sibisi.

As a former Two Oceans Marathon winner, he prided himself in being fit and healthy, but when he started experiencing difficulty in urinating, along with a burning sensation in 2010, he started to feel concerned.

“I went to my family doctor and he told me not to be concerned, so I tried to ignore my symptoms. In 2012 I collapsed, and then only were my symptoms taken more seriously. After some tests, I was told I had stage three prostate cancer,” tells Sibisi.

As a cancer Survivor in remission, Sibisi appeals to all men to not delay being tested for cancers such as prostate and testicular cancer.

“If you are experiencing any worrying symptoms, rather be safe and go to your doctor for screening,” concludes Sibisi.

Former Two Oceans Champ and prostate cancer survivor, Thulani Sibisi, to take fight against cancer to streets of Soweto…

28 October 2014 – CANSA is excited to be a part of this year’s Nike Soweto Marathon taking place on 2 November 2014.

As the official charity, the CANSA Lukholweni Care Home team will be promoting cancer awareness & SunSmart behaviour, by providing free sunscreen to all participants and spectators.

The Route

The 42km route takes the runners into the historic heart of Soweto and by the 12-kilometre marker – Vilakazi Street. As you wind and climb the hill you will also pass Uncle Tom’s Community Hall and the Hector Pieterson Museum and memorial that commemorate the 1976 student uprising.

A good time to reflect on our country’s robust recent past. The 36-kilometre marker is met at the Chris Hani Baragwanatha Hospital and the end is soon visible as the runners make their way over the bridge crossing the N1 Highway.

This is more than just a tour through the warm heart of Soweto. It is a journey through our tumultuous history. To be sure the route is an undulating one, testing at times but it is a passage full of great reward, made extra special by the people of Soweto.

Former Two Oceans Champ & Prostate Cancer Survivor to Participate

Prostate cancer survivor, Thulani Sibisi, is joining the fight against cancer, by taking part in the Soweto Marathon. As a former Two Oceans Marathon winner, he prides himself in being fit and healthy.

As a cancer survivor in remission, he is taking the fight against cancer to the streets of Soweto.

“At the Soweto Marathon I will be running in order to show all men that you can overcome cancer. I hope to motivate the Soweto community to become a part of the CANSA Soweto Care Centre and support its Lukholweni Care Home, in order to get the cancer education, care and support they might need,” says Sibisi.

Visit CANSA at the Marathon Expo

The CANSA Lukholweni Care Home team will be at the marathon expo from Thursday 30 October to Saturday 1 November, where runners can redeem their race packs.

“We’ll help all the runners and participants to stay SunSmart, by providing free sunscreen at one water point along the route, on race day. We are also going to exhibit our Men’s Health material, to educate men on the importance of screening and early detection, as well as offer Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) tests – a simple blood test to detect prostate abnormalities. We will also be selling CANSA products to help raise funds,” says Johanna Francis, CANSA Lukholweni Care Home Coordinator.

14 November 2014: Celebrate International Volunteers Day on the 5th of December 2014 with CANSA – a day dedicated to show appreciation to all volunteers who give of their time, skills and money to help people in need.

CANSA’s Acting CEO, Elize Joubert says, “Oscar Wilde once said that ‘The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention’ and that is exactly what our CANSA Volunteers do. With small (and big) gestures along with the dedication of their time, our Volunteers are changing the lives of those affected by cancer.”

CANSA Needs Volunteers

CANSA needs the support of Volunteers to reach the communities in South Africa, to help provide its care and support service. More than 6 000 Volunteers help 500 communities and reach approximately 14 000 cancer patients and their families.

“International Volunteers Day is a great opportunity to thank all Volunteers for the tremendous work and support they give. CANSA Care Centres around the country host Volunteer gatherings on this day to salute and acknowledge their valuable contribution in helping to create a world without cancer,” continues Joubert.

CANSA Volunteers Share

Dorothy Masiane (62), breast cancer Survivor and CANSA Phakamisa Navigator, explains, “CANSA supported me through counselling while going through my cancer journey and gave me the opportunity to volunteer as a Phakamisa navigator; in order to uplift other patients and to educate my community about cancer. I love being around people, helping to save lives and educating how to do self-breast examinations to both men and women and to teach them that when they feel something in the breast or when they realise any changes in their bodies, to come forward. I’ve realised that most men and women don’t talk about their health and we try to help them with that. It’s my pleasure to see some of them trying to change the way they see things.”

“I’ve gained a lot of experience working with people – teaching and helping them learn how to live their lives with and through cancer. To me this work is like peeling an onion – there are more layers to discover and explore. It also helps teach me and my entire family on how we should lead healthy lives. While doing presentations, I’m not so afraid anymore to stand in front of a lot people and say something. It actually helps me be the best ‘Lucas’ ever, all thanks to CANSA and the Movember Foundation programme. I love helping people and getting them to talk about their health,” tells Lucas Pelompe, a Movember Navigator in Rustenburg.

Video: Men Tend to Avoid Going to the Doctor

$

Men – regardless of geography, race or ethnicity – tend to live shorter than women and become sicker or disabled earlier in life, according to studies in the US and internationally.

Dr. Ridwan Shabsigh, Head of the International Society of Men’s Health, says that this is due to the fact that men avoid visits to the doctor and that they are not into a culture of ‘preventative visits’.

They feel this is not the manly thing to do or that they are ‘invincible’. Watch video…

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

What’s Your Excuse for Avoiding Check-Ups?

  • Going to the doctor or for regular check-ups is a “chick thing” – men don’t go to the doctor…
  • The symptom (s) I am experiencing will eventually go away – if it gets really serious I’ll make an appointment…
  • Day-to-day demands of life or work are hectic – I don’t have time now…
  • Regular check-ups are a waste of time & money – I only go to a doctor as a last resort…
  • I’ve waited too long and I’m scared of what the doctor will find…

Excuses like these will only land you in hot water – the longer you put off visiting your doctor, the higher your risk for developing a chronic medical condition or worse, that it is too late for treatment!

The verdict is in – if you want to live a fuller, longer life – it’s time to recognise that you need to know and take care of your body, which includes regular check-ups.

Skin Cancer One of Most Common postAfrikaanse Persvrystelling…

24 November 2014: CANSA advises South Africans to enjoy summer by being safe in the sun this December, January and February. Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in South Africa and is the result of skin cell damage, which begins in the lower part of the epidermis (the top layer of the skin). Read Fact Sheet regarding Solar Radiation & Skin Cancer…

“We can develop skin cancer when we ignore our bodies’ signals to avoid sunlight. It’s important to know how to reduce your risk of skin cancer, especially during summer when the sun’s rays are the harshest, so use an approved CANSA SunSmart Choice approved sun screen and protective clothing,” says CANSA Acting CEO Elize Joubert.

CANSA is putting the focus on spot-the-spot screening. Moles, brown spots and growths on the skin are usually harmless, although anyone who has more than 100 moles or atypical moles is at a greater risk for melanoma.

Adds Joubert – “It’s essential that you check your skin carefully every month by doing a mole check. Check for any changes in the moles. Ask a family member or friend to examine your back and the top of your head, while you can check the rest of your body. If you notice any of the warning signs, see a doctor or dermatologist immediately.” Read more about being SunSmart here…

ABCDESkin Cancer Warning Signs – Your A B C D E Checklist:

  • A-symmetry – a mole or mark with one half unlike the other – common moles are round and symmetrical
  • B-order irregularities – scalloped or poorly defined edges – common moles have smooth and even borders
  • C-olour variations and inconsistency – tan, brown, black, red, white and blue – common moles are usually a single shade of brown or black
  • D-iameter – larger than 6 mm
  • E-volving – changes in shape, colour or border of a mole

Tanning & Self-tanning Not Healthy

CANSA also warns against tanning. In recent years there has been a considerable increase in the use of sunless and self-tanning products such as sprays, mousses, gels, pills, nasal sprays injections called Melanotan 1 and 11. Melanotan 11 has serious side effects, and may induce malignant melanoma. CANSA warns against this product.

Although some self- tanning products contain sunscreen, it offers minimal ultraviolet radiation protection. It does not provide protection from the ultraviolet rays of the sun and CANSA strongly discourages individuals to use any form of tanning product.

Topical sunless tanning products that contain Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) prevent the formation of Vitamin D in the skin when exposed to the sun. Read our Fact Sheet…

Screening

Fotofinder

FotoFinder Machine

CANSA offers cutting edge screening technology for skin cancer through our mole-mapping dermoscope device called the FotoFinder. This screening test is available at some CANSA Care Centres and Mobile Health Clinics across the country. Contact your nearest CANSA Care Centre to find out where there is a FotoFinder in your area. Every client with suspicious skin damage is referred for an intensive skin evaluation.

“We only have five FotoFinders to date for use countrywide and we appeal for any donations or sponsorship to be able to purchase one for all our CANSA Care Centres. That way, we can help screen many more people and help reduce the cancer risk. Please make a secure online donation here…,” asks Joubert.

Skin Cancer Common Afri postEnglish Press Release…

ABCDEVelkanker Waarskuwingstekens – Pas die A B C D E toe:

  • A – simmetries – ‘n moesie of merk met een helfte anders as die ander helfte (dus nie simmetries nie). Gewone moesies is rond en simmetries
  • B – uitelyn afwykings – gekartelde / swak omlynde kante.
  • C – hromatiek – kleur variasies; taankleurig, swart, bruin, rooi, wit, blou. Gewone moesies is gewoonlik ‘n enkel-skakering van bruin of swart
  • D – eursnit is groter as 6mm

Maak jou veilige aanlyn donasie hier.. “vra Joubert.
