Daredevil Run – Cape Town 30 Jan 2015

Hollard Daredevil Run 13 Feb

It’s not every day that you find 1 000’s of speedo-clad men running through the streets of Johannesburg during Friday afternoon traffic – but once a year, men of all shapes and sizes gather for a good cause and a whole lot of fun.

Born in a pub in 2009, the Daredevil Run has gone from one brave soul daring to jog through peak hour traffic in a speedo, to a massive countrywide phenomenon with a noble cause.

The Hollard Daredevil Run will take to the streets in order to raise further awareness of prostate and testicular cancer.

The run has found a new home within the Hollard family, changing its colour from red to purple, as it gears up to host our Daredevils for an afternoon of energetic speedo fun.

Traditionally a November event, the race has moved to a new date and time, now taking place on 30 January  and 13 February 2015.

Why Be a Daredevil?

Each year, more and more men join the Daredevil movement to help run cancer outta town. The more men that participate, the louder our message is heard.

In turn, this results in a greater amount of money being raised. These funds will be spent on cancer screening and awareness programmes in disadvantaged communities across South Africa.

Screening for prostate and testicular cancer is crucial as early detection literally saves lives.

13 Feb you can join us at any of these cities:

WCD INVITE OPEN DAY FEB 2015 postAfrikaanse Persvrystelling

19 January 2015 – Wednesday, 4 February 2015 marks World Cancer Day and CANSA is emphasising that cancer is “not beyond us” in terms of cancer control and reducing the impact of the disease. Download poster…

Proactively Involved in the Fight Against Cancer

Elize Joubert, CANSA’s Acting CEO says “World Cancer Day is important because the global cancer epidemic is huge and set to rise. Currently 8.2 million people die from cancer worldwide every year – in South Africa, more than 100 000 are diagnosed annually. This day helps us spread the word and raise the profile of cancer”. See warning signs of cancer in adults & youth…

According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevent (CDC) more than twice as many people die from cancer than from Aids, malaria, and tuberculosis combined. The World Health Organization (WHO) projects that without immediate action, the global number of deaths from cancer will increase by nearly 80% by 2030, with most occurring in low- and middle-income countries.

Taking place under the tagline ‘Not beyond us’, World Cancer Day focusses on taking a positive and proactive approach to the fight against cancer, highlighting that solutions do exist regarding cancer care and early detection and that they are within reach.

Open Days at CANSA Care Centres to Mark World Cancer Day

As part of World Cancer Day, CANSA is hosting Open Days at its 30 CANSA Care Centres countrywide inviting communities, workplaces and the media to visit and find out more about our care and support programmes.

“We want to ensure fewer people develop cancer and that cancer Survivors are successfully treated and offered care, support, guidance and advice to all those affected by cancer to ensure a better quality of life. We know that cancer can have a serious impact on a person’s emotional, physical and mental state – so by understanding and responding to that impact – the quality of life for patients, their loved ones and caregivers can be maximised,” Joubert added.

CANSA provides comprehensive care and support programmes for cancer patients and their families, to help them find the best care solution and advice on managing side effects of treatment, be it physical, emotional and / or spiritual.

Joubert states, “Take part in our Open Days and find out more about how we work towards a cancer-free world. Many of our CANSA Care Centre teams also provide early detection & screening programmes to help reduce the cancer risk, while our nine Mobile Health Clinics provide screening and early detection programmes in remote areas.”

Support Resources for Cancer Survivors

She concluded, “For many people facing a cancer diagnosis, it’s the toughest fight of their lives. Maintaining social support networks and talking about cancer is important for both the person living with cancer and their caregiver. So we encourage cancer survivors to join our ‘iSurvivor’ e-online support programme.

It’s a free, e-mail based programme written by a cancer survivor to help other survivors cope better. It’s a manageable guide with all the helpful resources available such as health information, where the nearest CANSA Care Centre is, how to lead a balanced lifestyle, how to reduce the risk of recurrence of cancer and where to find counselling and support.” More resources for cancer Survivors may be found here…

Afri WCD poster postEnglish Press Release

KANSA Sorgsentrums Maak Deure Landswyd Oop as deel van Wêreld Kankerdag

South African Cancer Alliance – World Cancer Day 2015

Cancer Alliance Logo2 February 2015 – The 4th of February marks the International World Cancer Day and the International Childhood Cancer Day follows on the 15th of February.

Cancer is the leading cause of death globally and the top killer among the non-communicable diseases (NCD’s) which are the major focus of the WHO and UN. The World Economic Forum held in Davos from the 21-24 January had two sessions dedicated to the role of political, civic and business leaders role in turning the tide on cancer.

The 2015 global campaign for World Cancer Day and International Childhood Cancer Day 2015 is themed: ‘Not Beyond Us’ and “Act now for kids with cancer”.

With the focus on:

  • Choosing healthy lives
  • Delivering early detection
  • Achieving treatment for all
  • Maximising quality of life

For South Africa this would mean:

  • An increased focus on childhood cancer
  • A National Cancer Control Plan that makes provision for vaccination for HPV and HBV against cervical and liver cancers, early detection and screening for breast, cervical, oral and colorectal cancers and childhood cancers
  • effective cancer surveillance
  • equitable access to essential medicines and technologies
  • effective implementation of palliative care policies

Thus far, South Africa has succeeded to make progress on:

  • The HPV Vaccination programme for girls for between nine and twelve years since Mach 2014, although this does not form part of the national cervical cancer policy
  • HBV Vaccination as part of the routine childhood immunisation programme since 1995
  • The Cancer Registration Regulation of 2011 makes provision for the compulsory registration of all cancer cases

Cancer Alliance Collaborating with DoH:

The Cancer Alliance is working closely with the DoH and other role players to address the following priorities for effective cancer control in SA:

  • The National Cancer Control Plan of 1998 is outdated and has been in process of updating since 2009. It currently contains no details pertaining to childhood cancer.
  • The cervical cancer screening policy has been in process of updating since 2009.
  • For breast cancer, the highest cancer killer of South African women a breast health policy is urgently required to ensure equitable service delivery for all women.
  • Despite the cancer registration regulation the completeness of the National Cancer Registry remains a challenge evident by the last available report of 2008. The National Cancer Registry falls under the jurisdiction of the NHLS that is currently experiencing huge financial and management challenges.
  • Equitable access to essential medicines and technologies as well as palliative care for cancer patients across the nine provinces is not in place and often leads to patients not receiving treatment of palliation timeously leading to unnecessary suffering of unrelieved pain and symptoms.

Cancer stigma is well documented and a reality on our South African communities impacting negatively of the disease even further. People Living With Cancer, a member organisation of Cancer Alliance, will be launching a compelling video, “Unsilenced” for World Cancer Day on their website.

Let’s raise our collective voices in the name of improving our general knowledge around cancer and dismissing misconceptions about the disease.

About the South African Cancer Alliance

The Cancer Alliance is a collective group of cancer control non-profit organisations and cancer advocates brought together under a common mandate as result of the May 2011 Voice of Cancer Survivor Forum, a platform which allowed cancer survivors to express their needs regarding access to quality of care, attitudes, practices, policies of cancer control and services in South Africa.

The Alliance seeks to provide a platform of collaboration for cancer civil society to speak with one voice and be a powerful tool to effect change for all South Africans affected by cancer. The Alliance will act as a watchful eye on strategies and policies that ensure the significant reduction of South Africa’s cancer burden and improved access to care for all cancer patients.

The Cancer Alliance will achieve this through the publication of position statements / papers and baseline papers as well as public messaging relating to such publications. This will be strengthened with focused advocacy and lobbying activities with relevant stakeholders regarding issues faced by all South Africa’s Cancer patients.

9 February 2015: The Absa Cape Epic is taking place from 15 to 22 March 2015, with seven teams riding in support of CANSA, an official charity for the event. The Prologue of the race starts at the base of the iconic Table Mountain in Cape Town, and finishes off eight days later at Meerendal Wine Estate in Durbanville.

CANSA will be hosting sunscreen points at every stage of the race and offering free sunscreen to all riders and spectators. In addition to supplying sunscreen (which goes along with promoting being SunSmart to reduce the cancer risk) another important focus for CANSA at this year’s event will be to screen for skin cancer using a FotoFinder – a mole-mapping dermoscope device.

CANSA’s CEO, Elize Joubert says, “Our CANSA team will host health awareness exhibitions and offer free sunscreen at the Elgin, Worcester and Wellington stages. And we’ll be doing skin cancer mole mapping screening at the Prologue (15 March) and Grand Finale at Meerendal (22 March) with the FotoFinder. We encourage the riders and public to come and get screened and learn how to reduce your risk.”

Riders from Around Globe Supporting CANSA

The event attracts riders from all over the world, each with their own reason for taking part. CANSA has seven teams riding in support of them under the ‘CANSA Active’ group, some of whom are raising money for CANSA through online efforts leading up to the race.

Ruben Folgado cycling with Sergio Paz Danny Aaron cycling with Gary Aaron Erasmus Pretorius cycling with Wilbur Smith

For the second year in a row, Ruben Folgado and Sergio Paz, two cyclists from Spain, who have both been affected by cancer, will ride the Absa Cape Epic in support of the CANSA. Along with them will be teams from Spain, Australia and South Africa.

Gary Samuel Aaron, a cyclist from one of the Australian teams has this to say; “In 2003 my daughter, Sara, who was three years old at the time, was diagnosed with a large brain tumour. After several long surgical procedures and years of rehabilitation she is doing unbelievably well. She is 15 now and such an inspiration, she even summited Kilimanjaro with me last year. She is the reason why I am participating in this race, and doing it for CANSA.”

“For the second year, we have international riders (and more than we had previously) who are riding for CANSA in the Cape Epic. It’s amazing to see people from all over the world join the fight against cancer and support our cause. All of these riders have been affected by cancer in some way and it gives us hope to see how they inspire those around them to join the fight,” continues Joubert.

All of the CANSA Active riders are helping CANSA raise awareness about leading a balanced lifestyle, playing sport safely in the sun as well as providing education on being cancer-aware by encouraging smart choices with regards to diet and lifestyle. CANSA Active also gives riders the opportunity to participate in their favourite sporting activity or race, while raising funds online to support CANSA’s care and support to those affected by cancer.

Malignant melanoma (sometimes referred to as only melanoma) is the most dangerous form of skin cancer and currently accounts for approximately 1% of all cancer deaths. South Africa has one of the highest incidences, if not the highest, of malignant melanoma in the world as far as Caucasians are concerned. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease.

Cyclist, riders, runners, and anyone who partakes in outdoor sports are exposed to the sun’s UV rays, which can put them at risk for skin cancer.

A Word From Our JHB Daredevils:

John Owens, Mr SA 2014, says that 5 km’s may seem like a long run, but when you’re running with the other guys for a good cause with such a great vibe, it does not feel long at all!

Eddy Rust, Mr SA Bachelor 2015, feels that the race gives men the opportunity to stand up for & fight for something important together… – in peak hour traffic!

Shaun Harris, SA Swimmer, also enjoyed the race even though it is very different from training in the pool!

One of the brave participants said that the more people are aware, the more responsible they become in looking after themselves. He had his first finger-prick PSA Test this year and is determined to make the Daredevil Run & PSA screening an annual habit.
